History of Sea Salt on Cape Cod
The company called 1830 Sea Salt continues the historic tradition of salt production by using the abundant natural resources of time, wind, sun, and salt water from the beautiful shores of Cape Cod. It honors a time in the early 1800s when, except for fishing, the most important industry on Cape Cod was the manufacturing of salt. Living off of the land and the sea, Cape Coders farmed in accordance with the rhythms of the tides and phases of the moon. Cape Cod salt production was an essential requirement of colonial life and the sole means of preserving food when refrigeration did not exist.
The British Blockade of the Revolutionary War forced New Englanders to produce salt for themselves and created an economic boom for Cape Coders. By 1800 there were over 800 salt works across Cape Cod. In modern time the harvesting of salt continued with artisans including Cape Cod Saltworks Sea Salt, who in 2014 generously donated their Salt making business to Cape Abilities, a nonprofit organization that supports individuals with disabilities.
1830 Sea Salt
Paul Shibles, who developed the entrepreneurial business for Cape Abilities, now continues the tradition of Cape Abilities Saltworks under the time honored 1830 Sea Salt Company. The unique flavor of the sea crystals echoes the briny tang of a summer’s day at the beach.
No processing, no additives, and no anti-caking agents. Just delicious salt. Delectable salt products derived from the shores of Cape Cod, evaporated and harvested in Chatham are brought to your table with love and gratitude. In the spirit of salt which heals in the form of sweat, tears, or salt water, 1830 Sea Salt takes over where others simply left off. After all, no one should go salt free.
It’s all about the sea salt.
